This course will explore over a thousand years of Jewish life in Ukraine
through periods of flourishing and creation of Jewish religious and cultural
movements as well as times of great persecution and antisemitism.

Instructor Janie Respitz has an M.A. in Yiddish language and literature. For
the past twenty five years she has performed in concerts throughout the world
and taught courses relating to Yiddish language, folklore, literature and
Eastern European Jewish history, at Queen’s University, McGill University,
Cummings Jewish Centre for Seniors and a variety of other learning
environments. Janie is also a singer of Yiddish songs, and often incorporates
her singing into her courses and lectures, sharing her lifelong passion with
her students and audiences. Janie has delighted audiences with her vast
repertoire of Yiddish songs and lecture topics in Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa,
Windsor, Vancouver, Winnipeg, Klez Kanada, New York, Montevideo and Israel.
