The People’s Yeshiva – Interpreting the Impossible: Death, Sin & Jewish Identity

November 30, 2023 @ 8:00 pm - 11:00 pm EST

When should one die instead of sinning? And when, according to the Rabbis, is
it preferable to sin? And, um, which sins do we have the green light for?
**Come find out on November 30th at 8PM at the Museum of Jewish Montreal!**
** **
Join the People’s Yeshiva with Steven Lapidus and Joseph Rosen yet again for a
nerdy, wordy evening of Talmudic investigation. We’ll start with an overview
of the text we started last time, and then get into pairs to study yeshiva-
style. We’ll roll up our sleeves and dig into the legal dilemmas discussed by
ancient Rabbis. What kinds of sins can—and can’t—we get away with if death is
on the table? Let’s find a way to make this Talmudic madness make sense in the
modern world. Snacks will be served.
~ About The People’s Yeshiva ~

This event is part of **The People’s Yeshiva of Mile End** —a series of
participatory study sessions, curated by Joseph Rosen, where we dig into the
Talmudic tradition in order to see how its ancient resources might have
surprises to offer the contemporary world. A guiding premise of the series is
that Rabbinic innovation happens not through rejection or criticism of the
past, but by means of subversive interpretation.

~ About Steven Lapidus ~

Steven Lapidus is a Montreal-based scholar of the history of Orthodox Judaism,
with a focus on the North American manifestation of Haredi Judaism. A former
co-curator at the Montreal Holocaust Memorial Centre, he has published
articles and book chapters in both English and French on Canadian Jewish
history and the Hasidic experience in North America. He teaches religion at
Concordia, including cross-cultural classes on sexuality, gender, death,
ritual and religio-social history.

This event will take place on the 2nd Floor of the MJM, currently accessible
